Raw and unpretentious, Gridlock is a series of lamps in the style of the Brutalist movement. Gridlock feels industrial in its straightforward, platonic forms and the repetitive efficiency of the grid; however, it is assembled entirely by hand from thousands of tiny brass parts. Philippe Malouin's tribute to the industry-inspired, labour-saving dreams of modernism is paid for in toil.
The grid pattern looks sharp from across the room and even sharper up close, and the brutalist silhouette fits my bare concrete wall perfectly. Assembly took me maybe ten minutes, which was a pleasant surprise.
The grid pattern on this lamp is so satisfyingly precise, it feels like a tiny piece of architecture on my desk. The raw concrete look adds a real weight to the room, even though it's not huge.
The straight-edged concrete form feels even heavier and more imposing in person than in the photos, and the repetitive grid pattern gives off a quiet, commanding presence in my hallway. It's exactly the statement piece I wanted for the brutalist corner.
